Chloe Slivka is an artist and animator of fantastic worlds
I started as a doodler, doodling became drawing, drawing became an obsession, obsession became a passion to become something more, to use my skills to create chracters that are lasting and original. This drive turned me into an aspiring world builder.
My obsession with creating animated storytelling started when I was young, watching cartoons on Sunday mornings to pass the time. I became inspired by the creativity and uniqueness of a small handful of captivating shows like Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, and Owl house. I was determined to create characters and stories just as great, just as original and just as meaningful.
So I taught myself to draw, animate, and design characters, drawing until I literally couldn’t anymore. I made them come to life through hours of development and practice. As I worked, the characters revealed themselves, showing me who or what they should be. And often, once their rough concept was completed, I began to establish a world that would suit them. I would build the world around the characters, adding details, goals, or important points along their journey as I went, all while keeping their storylines rooted in the reality of their world’s lore.
My current creative process works in all sorts of conditions. I love collaborating and leading teams of animators, as I did at DePaul’s summer program, as well as alone, at all hours, dreaming up a new technique or storyline. Often, my work is inspired during moments of boredom. I am constantly drawing, working on my skills and characters, as well as the environments they live in. I would take any moment or opportunity to focus on my passion, even using margins of my favorite books to develop ideas. So, for me, I see boredom as a gift, as a time where ideas can flourish and come to life.
My goal for the future is to bring my stories to life through animation. I want to create shows that are meaningful and impactful. I want to make these characters move, breathe, feel real and tangible. I’m truly inspired by shows from my childhood that had real depth and complexity. I want the shows that I create to relate to the audience and treat them as intelligent, caring individuals. I want to spark their imaginations like these shows did for me. You’ll see reflected in my portfolio my love of the craft and the production process in my character sheets, storyboards, background environments and character development collages. I intend fully to work as hard as I am able, and push myself beyond what I think I can do so that one day I can have the opportunity to create something special for others. As a kid with a dream, I will fight for this future through my dedication, passion, and undeterrable drive to succeed.
